The Centre for Studies on China, Korea and Japan

The Centre for Studies on China, Korea and Japan (UMR 8173 Chine, Corée, Japon) is the largest French research centre for studies on East Asia.  Founded on January 1, 2006, this joint research unit brings together the Centre for Studies on Modern and Contemporary China (Centre d’études sur la Chine moderne et contemporaine, CECMC), The Centre for Korean Studies (Centre de recherches sur la Corée, CRC) and the Centre for Japanese Studies (Centre de recherches sur le Japon, CRJ).  The Centre for Studies on China, Korea and Japan (UMR 8173 Chine, Corée, Japon) is under the guidance of the National Center for Science Research (CNRS) and the School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS).

In 2012 this unit comprised

  • 150 researchers (statutory and associate members, doctoral candidates)
  • 7 research engineers, technicians and administrators

The UMR carries out extensive individual and collective research, involving teachers, researchers, research engineers and Ph.D. students.

The research unit for China, Korea and Japan includes a wide range of disciplines: history, economics, anthropology, sociology, geography, political sciences, religious sciences and philosophy.

The unit undertakes many international research projects.

The teaching on China, Korea and Japan provided by the EHESS is intended for students enrolled for the doctoral or master's degree or for the School's own diploma, although, with the teacher's agreement, it is also offered to any interested person.

The aim of the courses on offer is to open the study of China, Korea and Japan to other cultures, other historical worlds and other disciplinary approaches.

The publication policy of the centre for studies on “China, Korea and Japan” has always been one of interdisciplinarity and transversality.

This has resulted in the production of many publications relative to the unit’s three areas of research

The centre for studies on “China, Korea, Japan” houses a large body of documentary resources on East Asia.

Digitalised, for the most part, the centres’ library catalogues can be consulted on the BULAC and SUDOC catalogues.

Many other electronic resources are also available (bibliographic databases, journal databases and digital text corpora.
